Elizabeth Celebrates “Get Fit Day” With Friends and Family

United Way of Greater Union County and Elizabeth Hosted A Day of Fun Activities
Rain gave way to a sunny day full of both athletic and entertaining activities for the Elizabeth community.  Everyone from children to senior citizens came to participate in the day’s events.  Dancers of all ages, street performers, face-painters and more all came out to celebrate Michelle Obama’s “Lets Move” initiative.

Unfortunately, within the African American and Hispanic communities, 40% of children are obese.  Born out of the Let’s Move initiative, “Get Fit Day” is a day designed to bring national awareness to communities about the issues surrounding childhood obesity.  Locally, town leaders, council members, United Way of Greater Union County, community-based organizations and the New York Red Bulls took this opportunity to educate the community about healthier ways to eat and exercise through fun and exiting activities!  Our own “Get Fit Day” raised awareness to not only health issues and obesity, but also awareness to body image and overcoming these health issues by providing a variety of experiences and athletic events.
Families and children stretched and warmed up before playing with the New York Red Bulls Street Team players. They participated in a soccer clinic and also had a “front row” view of the street team’s unique demonstrations and cool soccer moves.

The day had strong support from different organizations and local health care providers.  In addition to the soccer clinic, Whole Foods from Millburn-Union donated healthy snacks and beverages for over 500 attendees.  Parents and adults were offered health screenings and were given fitness information from health care professionals from Trinitas.  Also, children participated in health games and exercises provided by the Elizabeth YMCA branch.  The American Dance Studio Service Stars performed dance routines, and the Golden Girls and Guy Steppers shone as our senior performers.

Our friend and supporter, Giovanna Drpic, anchor and producer for Verizon Fios1, “Money & Main$treet” served as the day’s MC.  The day also featured appearances by representatives of the Miss America Organization Beauty Queens Amanda Martinez, Miss Middlesex County and Samantha Rizzuto, Miss Union County.

The event was organized by Mayor J. Christian Bollwage; Councilwoman-at-Large, Patricia Perkins–Auguste; First Ward Councilman, Carlos Torres; Assembly members from the 20th District, Annette Quijano and Jamal Holly; and United Way of Greater Union County, President/ CEO, James W. Horne.
