United Way's Women's Leadership Council Initiatives

United Way of Greater Union County’s Women’s Leadership Council (WLC) launched their Read-A-Loud Program this past November. Members of the Steering Committee visited Roselle Day Care in Roselle, Proceed Day Care in Elizabeth, and King’s Daughter Day School in Plainfield, to read books to children between the ages of three and six. This program is part of the mission of the Women’s Leadership Council to promote early literacy in the community. Statistics have shown that children who do not read efficiently by the time they are six years old will suffer in the long wrong as they progress through their education.

United Way of Greater Union County Women’s Leadership Council is a group of philanthropic women dedicated to changing the odds for children and families through early literacy initiatives. They inspire and empower women and support the community goals of United Way of Greater Union County through philanthropy, advocacy, and volunteerism. Member Benefits include: building and sharing leadership skills, invites to networking opportunities and workshops, planning and implementing fundraising and volunteer events.

The WLC also held a special fundraiser called “Shop for A Cause” at Lord  & Taylor in Westfield on December 1st to raise funds and awareness for their cause. Proceeds will go to buy books for children in need throughout the community. The council has since partnered up with Barnes & Noble to receive book donations that will be donated to the children in the Union County community. From now until the end of December, you can go any Barnes & Noble location and choose to donate a book to a child in the community.
This is only the beginning for the Women’s Leadership Council and they look forward to a New Year filled with special events and spreading awareness about the issues of early literacy in Union County.
