NJ Youth Corps Members Explore History and Opportunity at Muth Museum Visit

New Jersey Youth Corps Corpsmembers recently stepped outside the classroom for an immersive educational experience at the Muth Museum in Paterson, where history, sports, and social progress came together in a powerful learning environment.

As part of their Social Studies curriculum, Corpsmembers explored the legacy of the Negro Leagues and examined how sports have intersected with broader social and economic change in the United States. The visit provided students with a deeper understanding of resilience, leadership, and the role athletics have played in advancing equity and opportunity.

The trip was organized by United Way of Greater Union County, which continues to prioritize hands-on learning experiences that go beyond traditional instruction. Leaders emphasized that exposure to real-world history and environments plays a direct role in strengthening academic outcomes and critical thinking skills.

“Experiences like this help our young people connect what they learn in the classroom to the real world,” organizers shared. “It builds perspective, confidence, and a stronger sense of what’s possible.”

The organization remains committed to investing in programs that prepare youth for long-term success, not only academically, but also in the workforce and their communities. By combining education with experiential learning, initiatives like this aim to develop well-rounded individuals equipped with the tools to lead and succeed.

The day concluded with appreciation for the Muth Museum staff, whose engagement and hospitality helped bring history to life for the next generation.
